STATE HOUSE TURNS PRESIDENT OBAMA PHONE CALL TO KENYA ON BURNT DOWN AIRPORT, into a PR tool.

By Jared Opiyo

KENYAN government has turned into a Public Relations (PR) tool the offer by US President Obama to support in rebuilding Jomo Kenyatta International Airport devastated by a mysterious fire early yesterday.

Nairobi is in a strained diplomatic relationship  with the Washington DC which led other Western nations in publicly warning against voting President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy who are both facing charges of crime against humanity at The Hague.

The diplomatic row widened when President Obama in his second tour to Africa intentionally skipped Kenya, his fatherland but instead toured the neighbouring Tanzania and other African countries perceived to be conducting their affairs to the standard of the West.

However the unexpected call from the White House to President Kenyatta informing him of the US concerns over the fire incident at  the country’s main Airport caused excitements within State house which immediately its relevant communication units to transmit the same to the world.

Critics have however moved quickly to point out that the government is maximizing on the development to patch up its 'tattered' image as mirrored in the West.

Head of Communications from Raila Odinga’s CORD coalition Mr. Phillip Etalle has questioned on his social media accounts the motive behind State house out-blowing the ''phone call issue yet there are many such calls made by Obama across the world but which have remained unnoticed'.

ZIMBABWEAN PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE’S THE AFRICAN HERO AND CALLS NELSON MANDELA AN IDIOT,COWARD.

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has attacked the ailing Nelson Mandela calling him an idiot and a coward who accommodated the whites in South Africa after he became the president at the end of apartheid.

He attacked Mandela at a victory party to celebrate his record seventh term in office following his victory in the country’s disputed elections.

In one of his trademark fiery speeches, the 89-year-old Mugabe -- who has led the southern African country since 1980 -- claimed that he should be hailed as an African hero instead of Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon and former president of neighboring South Africa.

"While Mandela sits comfortably in a hospital, I stand before you fit and healthy, ready to lead this country and the Zimbabwean people for at least another 25 years," Mugabe added, referring to the 95-year-old Mandela's ongoing treatment for a lung condition.

Mugabe tightened his iron grip on power in last week's elections after he received 61 percent of the vote while his ZANU-PF party won a two-thirds majority in parliament, though there are allegations of widespread fraud and violence against the opposition.
"My huge victory in these elections prove I am the greatest leader in the history of Africa," Mugabe told supporters in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. "I have spent my whole life fighting for the Zimbabwean people and they continue to elect me."

"I am the greatest African who has ever lived," Mugabe said. "The world should love me more than the idiot Nelson Mandela. F**k Nelson Mandela. As I waged war against colonialism, that coward sat on his ass in prison for 27 years. He's a coward.

"I have been leader for 33 years. Mandela was president for five years. What kind of idiot gives up political power? Great leaders like me know how to stay in power.

Mugabe also mocked South Africa's multicultural "rainbow nation" in his speech, claiming that Mandela didn't care about the interests of black Africans.

"There is only one color allowed in Zimbabwe, and it is black," he said. "I banned the color white in my country. Nelson Mandela told all the white people to stay in his ridiculous rainbow nation. He should have thrown all of the whites out of his country like I did.

KENYA CONSUMERS ORGANIZATION PARTNERS WITH A SWEDISH BODY TO PROMOTE ORGANIC FARMING IN WESTERN KENYA

By Samuel Ouma

The Kenya Consumer Organization (KCO) in partnership with the Swedish Society for Nature and Conservation (SSNC) has launched a campaign to promote  organic farming to improve food security in Western Kenya.

Speaking to KCO Executive Director Mr. Francis Orago, the programme which is being piloted in Siaya County aims at improving soil fertility to enhance food production in the area through the use of organic manure and also to control the use of chemicals to enhance healthy yield.

“Our main aim is to boost the crop production in this region of hence ensure that the resident’s perceived good yield without using fertilizer as one of the manures,” He added.

Mr. Orago revealed that during the three months programme dubbed ‘Organic farming for sustainable food for all’, farmers will be trained on techniques of recycling nutrients in organic matter by use of compost manure, adding that this will also help in reducing food production costs.

He emphasized on the need for organic farming techniques, noting that most farmers in the region can not afford fertilizers due to its high costs and lack of effective capacity to use them.

The Director warned that due to high chemical content, the use of inorganic fertilizer is harmful to both human health and soil fertility hence interfered with the crop production leading to poor harvest of the crops.

Orago who was addressing the press in Bondo town observed that if small scale farmers are capacitated to practice organic farming at affordable rates, the technique will address the perennial food shortages in the region.

Orago was joined with KCO regional coordinator for Western Kenya Ms. Eunivensia Adongo and programs coordinator Mr. Richard Odhiambo Awange.

PRESIDENT UHURU KENYATTA BUYS JACKAL NEWS TO BOOST HIS PROPAGANDA DOCKET

State House Director of New Media, Digital and Diaspora Dennis Itumbi has declared interest on the Jackal News, the latest flamboyant kid in the hapless Kenyan media scene, scene according to a series of Twitter communication.

The Jackal News, part of the Jackal Media Corporation, was launched in November 2011, with a view of offering the kind of news you will never find in the daily newspapers and on evening news.

Over the years, the website has made tremendous progress, but crucially it has been embedded one of the respected news outfits in the east African nation, home of four daily newspapers, less than a dozen TV channels and scores of FM channels.

It is clear if Itumbi was representing himself, unknown investors or his employer, but the Jackal News’s board of directors will make a decision based on the offer made that will include not just cash but also staff at Jackalnews and the vision of the new investor, . “We shall make a decision based on the offer being made, but we could very much like to remain in control, so the highest we can offload is 49% of the shareholding” said a Jackal News top official, who requested to remain unnamed because the official is not allowed to talk.

The new offer touched off a firestorm in the Social Media. In December 2012 a Kenyan resident in Canada (Investor)- Rashid Wanjala acquired the then fast rising Kenya-Today.com from political operative Jeff Nyamboga at what many digital media analysts termed as “bullish price”.

PRESIDENT KENYATTA SPEAKS ON TEACHERS SALARY.HERE'S HIS FULL PRESS RELEASE

It will be recalled that the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) called a strike on 25 June 2013.

It will be recalled that the Industrial Court sitting in Nairobi ordered KNUT to call off the strike on 2 July 2013.

It will be recalled that KNUT did not call off the strike until 17 July 2013. The implication of the Court decision is that the continued strike after 2 July 2013 was illegal and not protected under law.

It will be recalled that Government said that it would not pay teachers who were on strike for the days they did not work in July. That position stands correct by law and was reinforced by the Salaries Review Commission.

Under Section 79 (6) of the Labour Relations Act (2007), no employer is obliged to pay an employee for services not rendered during a protected (legal) strike.

Further, the Labour Relations Act (2007) Section 80 (1) b states that an employee who takes part in a strike that is not in compliance with the provisions of this Act – that is an illegal strike – is deemed to have breached the employment contract and is not entitled to any payment or any other benefit under the Act, in the period of the illegal strike.

In addition, the Employment Act 2007 Section 17 states that “an employer shall pay the entire amount of the wages earned by or payable to an employee in respect of work done by the employee in pursuance of contract of service directly”.

Dispute resolution

There are clear dispute resolution mechanisms that were available to KNUT, and which also apply to any other trade unions or employees directly. They include reporting the existence of a dispute to the Cabinet Secretary responsible for labour and various avenues for negotiations.

Government urges all unions to abide by the procedures laid down in their Collective Bargaining Agreements and to fully exhaust dispute resolution mechanisms as provided for in law before taking industrial action in order to guarantee stable industrial relations. Going forward, Government will follow in full, the provisions of the law in relation to this matter.

Government would like to take this opportunity to inform all trade unions that due adherence to the laid out mechanisms in law, including for dispute resolution, will form the basis for government engagement in any disputes.

July Pay

Having laid out the legal provisions which confirm that the KNUT strike became unprotected and therefore illegal after the 2 July 2013 Industrial Court order, Government states as follows:

Teachers agreed to extend school terms by a total of 2 weeks (one at the end of second term and one at the end of third term) in order to make up for time lost.
Teachers further agreed to carry out extra lessons during the second term to bring schools up to speed with the time lost.
In consideration of the above, Government has decided to pay teachers their withheld July salaries on the basis that they will teach for the time they were illegally absent from school.
Government urges KNUT to work with the Teachers Service Commission to ensure that teachers’ attendance in schools improves beyond the bleak picture of 50 per cent painted in a recent report.
KNUT agrees to work very closely with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to support the implementation of the laptop project so as to ensure the integration of ICT into the entire education sector in the country.
Further, KNUT agrees to work with the Teachers Service Commission and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in the delivery of quality education standards and services.
